Chummeng Soun is a University of Massachusetts Lowell Student studying for his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree with a concentration in Graphic Design and Asian Studies. He is passionate about bridging modern media with arts and culture leading him to create works inspired by urban landscape of Lowell.
He is a Principal Dancer and Senior Dance Instructor at the Angkor Dance Troupe, an organization focused on connecting communities through the preservation of Cambodian Performing Arts. He works closely with the artistic director to develop the annual residency that bring together live music and Cambodian theatre.
Soun, who was 9 years old in 2005 when his family emigrated from Cambodia, also performs with Flying Orb, a group of younger Cambodian-American dancers in Lowell who incorporate film into their original works, which are expressive of their experiences navigating two cultures.
Soun carries that passion to his job working with Cambodian-American youth at Angkor dance troupe. He sees himself as a bridge between the older immigrants and younger Cambodian-Americans who identify more strongly with American culture.
"Through all their suffering in Cambodia and then moving here to America, Cambodians experienced a gap, and that gap is getting bigger," he says.
